OLT 201 Outings Training April 17 AND April 19

Outdoor Leadership Training Classes for new and aspiring leaders coming in April 2018! – TWO EVENINGS: April 17 and April 19

Do you want to be a Sierra Club Leader of overnight outings? Lead your friends to new and amazing wonders of nature? Do you want to hone your leadership skills?

Then this is the class for you – Highly Experienced Outings Leaders will share their decades of experience in leading advanced outdoor trips, and apply their knowledge to OLT 201, the Sierra Club’s Advanced Leader Training

This training is mandatory for new leaders who wish to lead overnight trips, which includes backpacking, paddling, ski trips, or peak climbing.

Participants will also review OLT 101, Outings Leader Handbook, Basic training for leaders, which is the pre-requisite for OLT 201.

During the class, we’ll cover the following topics:

Trip Planning and Design –
A focus on Safety management, trip planning logistics, pre-trip correspondence, trailhead talk, and conservation themes – covers the essentials of good trip planning, screening of participants.

A well-planned trip is a successful trip, both for the leader and the participants.

We will also cover the use of Internet tools such as Meetup or Campfire for screening and managing the participant list.

Interpersonal Leadership Skills
Focus on the soft interpersonal leadership skills vs technical skills
Identifying different leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire), when to use them

Discussions on expectations leaders have of participants and of participants on leaders

Group Management
Identifying and managing different stages of group development
Understanding appropriate leadership styles for each stage
How to manage emerging problem behaviors

Nuts and Bolts
We will cover the various forms and liability waivers for Sierra Club

What to do if things go wrong
