San Blas Birding

May 17, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Free – $5

In July 2015, on a visit to California for some shorebird work, Jonathan Vargas met Steve Howell. Steve Howell is a well-known birding tour leader and author of bird books and publications. The two birded together and talked about the first Big Day that Howell did in San Blas with Peter Pyle (bird aging and molt specialist and author) in January 1983. Since that day, Howell had been wondered about another Big Day in San Blas, especially now that birding sites are much better known. In January 2016, the two birded the San Blas area for a few days and talked a bit more about it, but talk is cheap. Their goal was 250 species but they knew it would be tough, especially when they decided to do it “purer” not using sound recordings. And then, in January 2017 they finally did it, finding 246 species. It was an amazing Little Big Day in San Blas.

Jonathan Vargas is a shorebird biologist and a local birding guide from San Blas, Nayarit Mexico. He is currently working at Terra Peninsular, A.C., an organization committed to preserve and protect the natural ecosystems and wildlife in the Baja California Peninsula. He is a Bird Conservation Projects Associate and also promotes birding tours and ecotourism based on the communities at the natural protected areas of Terra Peninsular, A.C.
