7th Annual Winter Solstice Hike (SPS#20)-Buckeye/Cruikshank (~8 miles, ~2,400′)
December 19, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm
SAFETY FIRST: MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIRED! GROUP SIZE WILL BE MAINTAINED AT ABOUT 15.
This will be the 7th Annual Winter Solstice Hike (but for the second time, we can’t do the traditional 3 Forks Limekiln route (this time due to the damage from the Dolan Fire)). This is also Silver Peak Series Hike No. 20.
Nostalgia Note: my first hike in the Santa Lucia’s (about 20 years ago) was along this route.
We did this hike in December ’15:
…and in the reverse direction in August ’18:
What to Expect:
This is an eight mile hike with moderately strenuous climbs featuring ocean views, grassy meadows, backcountry camps, and natural spring water sources. We will probably encounter some tree obstacles and some moderate brush (INCLUDING POISON OAK!) encroachment.
We’ll take a moderate pace (~2MPH) and enjoy a leisurely day of hiking. Although we will mostly be on trail (which should be in moderate to good shape), before we get to Buckeye Camp we’ll go “off piste” about 800′ uphill on one of the grassy Soda Ridges to the “Chert Peaklet”, a prominent rock outcropping that’s 2,850′ high and has commanding views of the peaks to the north like Cone and Junipero Serra Peaks.
After we drop back down to the trail we’ll continue to Buckeye Camp where we’ll have lunch at the adjacent ocean overlook (water should be available there).
After lunch we’ll continue across Redwood Gulch Creek and then up and over Buckshank Ridge, after which we’ll take the long meander down towards Cruikshank Camp. We’ll take a break and regroup there, then head back down to Highway 1. This trip does require a car shuttle which we’ll arrange closer to hike day.
RSVP: This is a waitlisted event with limited space so RSVP to the waitlist. I must know you (whether personally or through another MBAHG member) to be a strong hiker able to maintain a moderate pace over distance and on steep terrain. Priority will be given to folks with whom I’ve hiked before and/or who are vouched for by others whom I know.
This is a group hike. PLEASE DON’T COME ON THIS HIKE IF YOU ARE GOING TO GO OFF ON YOUR OWN AHEAD OF THE GROUP!!!
MEETING TIME: 8:30am
