Alpine Wonderland – East Sierra Entrance
August 9, 8:00 am - August 13, 4:00 pm
Beginning at 9,200′ this hike takes us into Humphrey’s Basin (11,400′) where we’ll spend our time strolling (cross country hiking) past park-like wildflowers under the watchful gaze and beauty of the Sierra Crest. This is an alpine setting that requires a love for the high country and comfort hiking off trail.
This is not a beginner trip.
Day 1 – Summit Lake ~ 5 miles
Day 2 – Desolation Lake ~ 3 miles + afternoon scouting for Day 3
Day 3 – Puppet Lake/Moon Lake Area ~ 5 miles (cross country)
Day 4 – Down French Canyon to Piute Canyon ~ 9 miles
Day 5 – Out ~ 6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate but must be comfortable rock hopping (off-trail)
– I have the permit – no cost
– No Campfires as we’ll be above tree line except possibly on Day 4
– Bear canister recommended. There will be no trees for hanging food.
– Water availability excellent (bring your filter)
Take Highway 120 Over Tioga Pass to Highway 395 South to Bishop. Once in Bishop find Highway 168 and take right (West) to North Lake. The Trail leaves from the far end (West End) of North Lake/North Lake Campground area.
Campgrounds in the North Lake, Lake Sabrina area may be difficult to secure. I’ll try to get a camp and will let folks know.
To attend, please RSVP to the Waitlist. I will email with backpack questions if need be and move you to the “yes” column once you have been qualified. I will be limiting this trip to 6 backpackers.
