Here’s an inspiring immigrant story you probably haven’t seen before!

Councilwoman Carmen Castillo cleans hotel rooms and then ran for and won the seat in Providence RI City Council from the 9th Ward.  She maintains her full-time job at the hotel and takes on her new role in politics.  She faces skeptics who say she doesn’t have the education to govern, fights for a $15 hourly wage in the City, and wins a tough re-election against two contenders.  It’s a journey behind the scenes after the victory.

This feature-length, award-winning documentary was more than seven years in the making.  It will be released on PBS in the fall. The Monterey Bay area launch for the film’s impact campaign includes a screening of the film, a special Q&A following the film, and light refreshments.
