Hot Springs, A Ghost Town, JMT, PCT & A Water Fall!
October 2, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Let’s spend a few days playing tourist in the eastern sierras along Hwy 395. There’s lots to see and a number of hot springs to soak in along the way.
Bring Water! We will be doing a lot of dry camping!
We’ll start with meeting at Travertine hot springs in Bridgeport on Friday The access to the springs is a good dirt road a couple of miles south of town. Jack Sawyer Rd is on the east side of 395 just north of the ranger station. I usually use dispersed camping but if there’s interest I’ll look into reserving a site in one of the area campgrounds.
Saturday we’ll drive south to tour the ghost town of Bodie. Bring your camera! The old church is the most photographed building in town.
Saturday night we’ll camp on Hwy 120 a few miles east of 395;
Sunday morning we’ll visit the Mono Lake visitors center.
There is gift shop in the Mono Visitors Center and various tourist trap stores across the street in Lee Vining.
From there we’ll drive south to the Mammoth area hot springs. There are a number of springs within a couple of miles of each other. There is a spring I haven’t been to yet and I’d like to find. From the pictures it’s probably the largest pool in the area.
Monday we’ll drive into Mammoth and up to the ski lift. From there we’ll take the shuttle bus down into Devils Post Pile and see the sights including the fantastic Rainbow falls. We can even hike on the PCT and/or JMT while we are there. That evening we can get in one more soak before we head home in the morning.
There is a fee to ride the shuttle from Mammoth ski lodge into Devils Post Pile.
After a last soak Tuesday morning we will pack up and drive home.
