Saguaro National Park – Cactus Country
December 3, 1:00 pm - December 6, 11:00 pm
Hiking around Saguaro Cacti was my dream for many years. Now I’m going to convert this dream into reality, of course together with all possible participants.
I booked tickets on United:
Flight SFO – Tucson UA5464 Thu, Dec 03, 2020 08:35 AM arrive 11:35 AM
Flight Tucson – SFO UA5406 Mon,Dec 07, 2020 08:15 AM arrive 09:55AM
There is evening flight on Sunday, but United frequently cancel flights, so I decided book Monday morning flight.
I know some hikers plan to drive ( > 13 hours…) , it would be good idea to arrive around noon in KOA , see below.
I also rented Jeep in Tucson airport and can take couple passengers, of course in case you arrive on the same plane.
I booked a cabin in Tucson / Lazydays KOA 5151 South Country Club Road Tucson, AZ 85706. Elsa booked tent places there as well. So if you prefer to stay in tent, please contact Elsa for details, there are still plenty of available tent places. if you are lucky you can book cabin in this KOA as well ( 3 are available now 10/01/2020) , but you can easily find airnb/vrbo/hotel place nearby. Hope we’ll have cell connection in this area.
My preliminary hiking/travel plan:
Thu: Start at 1:30pm and drive to Saguaro East. (30 min drive). We’ll take driving tour Cactus Forest Hike with short hikes Ecology Trail, Freeman Homestead and maybe Cactus Forest trail. Sunset will be at 5:30pm, we won’t have enough time for hiking.
Fri: Start at 7:30am, 35min drive to Javelina parking area in Saguaro East. we’ll take Tanque Verde Ridge to Juniper Basin campground. 12.3 miles , 3366 elev. gain. If we’ll all(!) feel like heroes then we can try to reach Tanque Verde peak 7049ft – then our hike will be 16.19 , elev gain – 4466.
Sat, partially rest day: Saguaro West Start at 8am. We start with visiting Arizona – Sonoma desert museum ( open 8:30am). Museum requires advance reservation and ticket costs 21$. After museum we’ll take loop hike King Canyon tr -> Wasson Peak -> Hugh Norris tr -> Esperanza tr.
It will be 8.11 miles, 1857 elev gain. After hike we can take driving tour Bajada scenic loop – it is unpaved road , that’s why i rented Jeep.
Sun: The Santa Catalinas ( it is different park and wilderness) : Bear Canyon – Sabino Canyon loop. Start 7:30am, drive 30min. 16 miles, 2917 ft elev. gain. Hikers who will need leave on Sunday, can hike with us to Seven Falls and then return (6-8 miles).
if you are interested to join this trip then RSVP, you’ll go to waiting list. Hikers who I hiked before or who has obvious hiking experience will have advantage to join this trip. If i approve you, then you can do all necessary reservations.
After approval you’ll need to make necessary reservations during 1 week and let me know your reservation details, otherwise I’ll remove your RSVP.
12 hikers will be limit for this trip.
All logistics questions we’ll discuss later.
