Science Sunday with Joe Burnett: Basin Fire Condor Rescue
May 19, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
It’s Science Sunday at the Lab, featuring Ventana Wildlife Society’s Joe Burnett, who will discuss the Basin Fire Condor Rescue
Condors were almost lost to extinction in the late 80s and heroic efforts to save them and reestablish populations in the wild have been successful. Those successes didn’t come easy and not without danger from natural forces like wildfire.
Come join Joe Burnett, Lead Biologist for Ventana Wildlife Society’s California Condor Recovery Project, as he shares his firsthand experience helping rescue 8 young, endangered condors from the 2008 Basin Fire. Joe will take you on the emotional rollercoaster ride of what transpired that unforgettable day, the obstacles faced, and the forces that aligned to make this rescue mission a real success.
Joe will also provide a behind-the-scenes look at how the Ventana Wildlife Society successfully restored condors to the wild in Big Sur and how they continue to release and monitor condors as part of their ongoing efforts to save this magnificent species.
Suitable for all ages!
Doors at 7 pm; $10-20 suggested donation; beer and wine available for purchase.
The Lab is located at 3728 The Barnyard, Suite G-23, Carmel CA 93923.
