Mount Madonna School is preparing for its high school production of Pippin, running Jan. 24-26.

Presented by a troupe of traveling performers in the form of a fractured fairy tale, Pippin is the story of one young man’s journey to become extraordinary. Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks to find his place in the universe through glories of the battlefield, romance and relationships, and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great).

“It is no surprise that Pippin currently is in resurgence on Broadway,” said longtime MMS performing arts director Sampad Kachuck. “Although the play is certainly a product of the free-thinking younger generations of the early ’70s, the themes still clearly resonate. The brilliance of this innovative musical is that within the glitz and flash, the journey concerns the existential and spiritual search for a true meaning in life.”

The production’s score ranges from ballads to ’70s fun.

Pippin was written by Roger O. Hirson, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. It was originally produced on Broadway by Stuart Ostrow, and directed by Bob Fosse. The 2013 Broadway revival was directed by Diane Paulus.

Mount Madonna School’s production of Pippin will run Jan. 24 at 7pm and Jan. 25-26 at 2pm at the school’s Hawks’ Nest Theater. Tickets are on sale at mms-pippin.brownpapertickets.com. Adult admission is $15; $10 for 18 and under; all seats are reserved.
