Benefit rides fill summer

Were you among the hundreds of celebrating cyclofans congregating in Morgan Hill last month? The Stage 3 finish of the Amgen Tour of California may not have been the usual nail-biter, but the carnival atmosphere surrounding the finish line Lifestyle Fair was mighty exciting, right? From friendly vendors to festive colors, from jumbotrons to jubilant announcers, ’twas a thrill to have it all in our own backyard. What a coup!

June means schools are out; please keep a wary eye out for an increased number of happy kids pedaling along our roads and trails. Parents, insist on helmets; after all, it is the law. And please don’t forget the sunscreen (Tell ‘em Cycle Guy never leaves home without it). And when the temps heat up, consider a family ride to the local frozen yogurt shop.

Every month, I encourage you to peruse the Save the Dates calendar and sign up for a ride or two, especially when the charities to which they are dedicated strike a chord in your heart. Don’t be frightened by the large numbers in their names; most of these event rides have a variety of distance options to suit all abilities. And remember, if you’re not ready to commit to a ride, most events have ways that you can support the cause without ever riding a bike.

Still, it’s way more fun on a bike!
