Happy New You

Registration open for spring rides

FESTIVE RIDES Bike Therapy’s Jingle Holiday Lights Ride in December was a success. Photo: Doug Hall

Happy New Gear! Was Santa good to you and your bicycle? Awesome! Were you able to join in Bike Therapy’s Jingle Holiday Lights Ride five days before Christmas? Super! Is it too cold to ride? Never! Just add an extra layer (or two) and enjoy.

Some of my all-time favorite spring bicycling events (like Gilroy’s Tierra Bella and Monterey’s Sea Otter Classic) are already accepting registrations, so sign up today. Can’t wait? Linden’s Pedaling Paths to Independence and Reedley’s King’s River Blossom Ride are both very nice early season opportunities.

Since it’s January, many of you will be making resolutions for 2020. How many of you plan to ride more often and get into better shape this year? Confession time: I broke my toe last September and have been unable to don my bike shoes since then. As 2020 begins, I will be joining many of you on the never easy but always rewarding road to better fitness.

Back in ’98, I transformed from an out-of-shape, very overweight exercise avoider into a lean, non-mean, cycling machine. The key points I learned might help you in your efforts. Get help with managing caloric input (I joined Weight Watchers; you do what’s right for you, but avoid fads and quick fixes). Ask a friend to join you and another to pray for you. Finally, make your bicycle an integral part of your low-impact exercise routine.

Email me your successes. We can compare!
